For a small dog, weight matters

A GPS tracker can be technically excellent and still be a poor choice if it is bulky on a small collar. For smaller dogs, we would look first at device weight, attachment security, battery life and the manufacturer's minimum dog-size guidance — then at app features.

Our starting point: Pawfit Lite

At 17.6g, Pawfit Lite is the lightest of these four and Pawfit explicitly positions it for smaller breeds. The trade-off is a shorter quoted battery life than Pawfit 3 or Tractive DOG 6.

PitPat is interesting if you want no monthly fee

PitPat weighs 30g and does not require a subscription. The manufacturer says it is suitable for dogs from 12 weeks old and suggests a harness may be more comfortable for puppies and very small breeds.

Tractive DOG 6: more battery, more weight

Tractive quotes up to 14 days with Power Saving Zones, but the DOG 6 weighs 39g and is recommended for dogs above 4kg. For a very small dog, that fit guidance matters.

Do not choose on weight alone

  • Check how securely the tracker attaches to your dog's actual collar or harness.

  • Think about how often you are realistically willing to recharge it.

  • Check mobile coverage on your normal walking routes.

  • Make sure live tracking can be activated quickly when it matters.
