MAN & HOUND / THE MOTORSPORT EDIT

Five watches. Five genuine racing stories. No filler.

There is something about a motorsport watch that a conventional dress watch cannot quite reproduce. The best examples carry part of the machinery, colour, engineering and history of racing onto the wrist. For this edit, we have deliberately chosen watches with a genuine connection to cars, drivers or racing culture — not simply watches with a racing-style dial.

THE EDITORIAL RULE — the story and the watch earn their place first. A retailer or affiliate relationship never does.

The shortlist at a glance

CLASSIC CAR — Breitling Top Time B01 Shelby Cobra · from £6,050 on leather / £6,450 on bracelet

COLLECTOR — Breitling Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 · from £8,650

RACING LEGEND — TAG Heuer Formula 1 × Senna · current special edition

MODERN PADDOCK — TAG Heuer Formula 1

1. Breitling Top Time B01 Shelby Cobra

OUR CLASSIC-CAR PICK

Breitling Top Time B01 Shelby Cobra blue dial chronograph

Few watches make the car-to-wrist connection as naturally as Breitling’s Top Time B01 Shelby Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s idea was famously simple and brilliant: combine a light British-style chassis with American power. Breitling translates that character into a 41 mm chronograph with Cobra colours and emblem, dashboard-like subdials, a tachymeter scale and its Manufacture Calibre 01.

WHY IT MADE THE CUT The blue dial, contrasting subdials and racing details feel integral rather than applied afterwards. For someone who loves classic cars as much as watches, this is the most convincing all-round piece here.

PRICE CHECK September 2026: £6,050 on leather; £6,450 on bracelet at Breitling UK. Prices can change.

2. Breitling Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5

THE COLLECTOR’S CHOICE

Breitling Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 chronograph

Some collaborations borrow a badge. This one has a real historical thread. The Aston Martin DB5 arrived in 1963; two years later, Sean Connery wore a Breitling Top Time in Thunderball alongside the DB5. Breitling’s 2026 tribute deliberately reconnects those two mid-century design icons.

The steel edition is limited to 1,022 pieces. Its silver-toned dial echoes the DB5’s most recognisable exterior, while the wooden inner bezel and hand-coloured gradient leather strap reference the car’s handcrafted cabin. Inside is Breitling’s Manufacture Calibre 01. The result feels less like branded merchandise and more like an object for someone who understands why the DB5 matters.

WHY IT MADE THE CUT — Of every watch in this edit, this has the richest collision of cinema, British motoring and watch history. It is expensive, but the story is unusually difficult to manufacture after the fact.

PRICE CHECK — September 2026: from £8,650 for the steel edition. Limited-edition availability can change quickly.

3. Ayrton Senna — TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna

EDITORIAL CHECK, NOT AN AFFILIATE SLOT

Ayrton Senna now has a current, verifiable watch that deserves the place in this edit: the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Senna, reference CBZ2081.FT8092. The 44 mm automatic chronograph uses a black DLC-coated titanium case, forged-carbon tachymeter bezel and vivid yellow rubber strap, with yellow, blue and green dial accents recalling Senna’s racing identity. It is powered by TAG Heuer’s Calibre 16 automatic movement and carries Senna detailing on the bezel and caseback.

MAN & HOUND VERDICT — This is now our Senna choice. TAG Heuer’s long association with Ayrton Senna gives the watch a genuine motorsport story, while the black-and-yellow design makes the connection immediately visible. It is a much stronger and more accurate recommendation than the earlier TW Steel image, which related to Damon Hill rather than Senna.

That decision is deliberate: credibility is worth more to this publication than one extra commercial link.

4. Tissot PR516 Quartz Chronograph

BEST ACCESSIBLE SWISS MOTORSPORT WATCH

For readers who want genuine Swiss motorsport heritage without moving into several-thousand-pound territory, the Tissot PR516 Quartz Chronograph is the strongest accessible choice in this edit. First introduced in the 1960s, the PR516 was inspired by the high-speed world of car racing. This 40 mm reference pairs a black chronograph dial and tachymeter bezel with rose-gold PVD accents, sapphire crystal, 100 m water resistance and a Swiss quartz chronograph movement. The two-tone bracelet gives it considerably more presence than its price suggests.

5. TAG Heuer Formula 1

THE MODERN PADDOCK CHOICE

TAG Heuer is almost impossible to leave out of a serious motorsport-watch discussion. The Formula 1 family is the clearest entry point into the brand’s racing world and works particularly well for a reader who wants something contemporary, recognisable and wearable rather than overtly vintage. We retain it as a core editorial choice while we build the strongest approved UK retail route.

The Man & Hound verdict

If we were choosing with our own money, the Shelby Cobra is the watch we would buy for pure classic-car charm. The DB5 Tribute is the more compelling collector story. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 x Senna is the emotional racing choice. Tissot gives you authentic motorsport credibility without luxury-watch pricing, while TAG Heuer remains the modern paddock benchmark.

A useful buying guide should make decisions easier, not simply make the list longer.
